Chances are slim that one would run into a prince when spending time in sunny southern California, but this is the situation for residents of the beachside community in Malibu, California. Alex von Furstenberg, Malibu resident, is descendant from Austrian royalty. He dropped the title of Prince in his youth, and these days Alex is content to be known more as the CIO of Ranger Global Advisors, LLC. This firm, which he founded, finds opportunities for value-based investing, which comes as no surprise to those who recognize that the von Furstenberg family has a long history of producing academics, diplomats, churchmen, soldiers, and other valued members of society.
Prince Egon of Furstenberg and Diane von Furstenberg had two children, Prince Alexander and Princess Tatiana, who they raised in New York City. The von Furstenberg family traces their lineage back to a contemporary of Charlemagne, Count Unruoch, and Napoleon himself. When she married, Diane von Furstenberg stated early on that she wanted to be remembered for her work, not her last name. She quickly became one of the fashion community’s most influential leaders. The Diane von Furstenberg Studio, LP, her global luxury brand, was restructured by her son, Alex von Furstenberg, which led to an increase from $1 million in annual revenues to over $200 million. Just like his mother, Alex was determined to forge his own way so that he would be judged solely on his own merits. After foregoing his princely title, Alex von Furstenberg graduated from Brown University and started his career with Allen & Company, where he was a trader on the Risk Arbitrage Desk. He climbed his way up the corporate ladder and now sits on the Board of Directors for many charitable organizations, companies, and investment funds, including the firm he founded, Ranger Global Advisors, LLC. The von Furstenberg family is royalty in Austria, but their impact on American business makes their family’s legacy that much more pronounced.
